New investment by Fannie Mae helps credit union expand outreach in minority community
RISMEDIA, Feb. 20-In an effort to reach more underserved Birmingham, Alabama families, New Hope Community Development Federal Credit Union is opening of its second location on North 19th Street downtown, and a new $100,000 deposit investment by Fannie Mae will help expand and improve the financial services offered to members.
Founded by New Hope Baptist Church, one of Birmingham’s most prominent African-American churches, NHCDFCU opened its first office on Jefferson Avenue in 1997 to promote financial growth and stability for families in West End neighborhoods, a city-designated Distressed Empowerment Community. The new 19th Street location will enable NHCDFCU to offer membership to a broader population including individuals who live, work, worship, attend school, or conduct a business, organization, or association in downtown and/or the surrounding areas.
“New Hope Baptist Church and the New Hope Credit Union continue to instill strength and inspire hope in the long overlooked and underserved West End,” said U.S. Representative Artur Davis (D-Alabama). “Now, even more Birmingham residents will reap the benefits of convenient access to affordable and reliable financial services based in their community.”
Fannie Mae’s $100,000 deposit investment is part of the company’s initiative to promote fair lending and increase affordable housing in the local area.
“Today, we celebrate new economic empowerment for the neighborhoods and communities served by New Hope Credit Union,” said Birmingham Mayor Bernard Kincaid. “Thanks to the support of Fannie Mae, New Hope has the necessary resources to reach out to individuals and families who previously have been underserved.”
