RISMEDIA, Nov. 18 ? You took a course on search engines at your local college, went to a couple of seminars, read up on Overture, Google, Yahoo and MSN. So why isn?t your Web page coming up?
If everyone is using these same tactics, your site will not go to the top of the search engines. By definition, you must stand out to the search engines to appear on the first page results for the competitive searches in the real estate, travel, auto, and just about all businesses.
So anything that hardware and/or software can do will not get you on the first page. Only a combination of proper coding, custom optimization, constant maintenance and targeted advertising, when accompanied by a complete understanding of the market and the target customer, will actually yield results.
If you are not going to promote and maintain a Web site, don?t bother to have one. The world already has enough lousy Web sites!
Instead, do it right: choose a niche market you know something about, and become part of the actual fabric of the Internet: become a content provider on a well-maintained Web site.
Anyone can search the Internet about anything:
choose something you know something about
become an expert, maintaining a list of relevant and useful links
get people to bookmark your site, to keep track of the resource
become the recognized site for the type of activity you covet
These small commitments now will yield cumulative results and create an ever-increasing flow of customers.
In other words, use what you already have ? perhaps a hobby, interest, sport or craft ? to gather information and resources online, to become the most important site on the Web for your chosen topic. Then, re-sort, cull, and repackage the information and resources to show everyone that you are as good at what you say you are.
We will all use your site, increasingly, to save trouble, and we?ll happily pay you whatever it is worth!
Now add a good basic business and marketing plan, capital, tenaciousness, welcome to the brave, new dot-com world.
