At least 1,000 Realtors that attended the 2006 Realtors Conference & Expo in New Orleans November 10-14 spent an extra day or more as volunteers helping New Orleans rebuild from last year's hurricanes.
Realtors attending the Conference, held November 10-14, packed more than just their briefcase. They brought their work clothes and spent an extra day or more in the Crescent City as volunteers helping New Orleans rebuild from last year's hurricanes.
More than 1,000 Realtors were scheduled to help Habitat for Humanity build seven homes in the Musicians Village, sponsored by Lowe's, and helped to complete the final work on four residential renovations for Rebuilding Together with Countrywide.
At the New Orleans City Park, Realtor volunteers cleared weeds and debris from lake shorelines, pruned and planted in the Botanical Gardens and strung holiday lights in the Celebration of the Oaks for the children.
"By volunteering their time and skills, Realtors coming to New Orleans will leave the city a better place than they found it. It was not a big decision for most as that is what Realtors do best-build communities everyday. That's what we're all about," says NAR President Thomas M. Stevens.
In addition to volunteering, Realtors also helped New Orleans rebuild in other ways. NAR and state and territorial associations of Realtors sponsored the construction of a total of 54 Habitat homes in the Gulf Coast area, including the seven in the Musician's Village, as part of the Realtor-Habitat Partnership for Gulf Coast Recovery program.
NAR was scheduled to be the largest convention to be held in New Orleans this year, bringing as much as $40 million in convention revenues and 30,000 visitors, and demonstrating Realtors' commitment to rebuild the city.
