How to Leap from Participant to Player

January 17, 2007, 3 pm
Reading Time: 2 mins read

Four steps to go from goal setting to explosive growth

By Marylyn B. Schwartz

RISMEDIA, Jan. 18, 2007-When setting your goals, decide what you want and double it. That's the advice of Bob Proctor, real estate guru and internationally acclaimed coach. At first blush, this sounds utterly senseless. After all, what was the point of setting a goal if that was not where one wanted to be?

However, after considering the proposition, it began to resonate and make sense. There is no doubt that most of us set our goals pretty conservatively. Be it fear of failure (or success) or just not being able to envision ourselves as superstars, we err on the side of scarcity rather than abundance.

What does it take to experience explosive growth? How does a person or business move from marginal participant to "player" status? Reflecting upon just those questions, here's what came to mind:

1. Break out of the expected. If whatever you were going to do is what you would normally do, do something else. It may seem contradictory to take that approach, but Einstein said, "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." Giant leaps require giant changes in thinking, direction or perhaps both.

2. Be willing to make a commitment and not be hampered by naysayers. While there is no guarantee that wanting is getting, the more vividly one is able to imagine the impossible, the more possible it becomes. We are prisoners of conventional thinking. Any facilitator of brainstorming will vouch for the fact that the best ideas come out after the "sensible, safe" ideas are exhausted. Silly, wacko and imaginative are the Disney empire cornerstones.

3. Never externalize your true power to an outside entity. Waiting for this or that to happen in order for explosive growth to occur is a waste of time. Saying things like, "If only he/she or it would do ‘X,' then certainly I would be able to do ‘Y.' That's what it will take for me to experience explosive growth." That kind of thinking equates to giving your power away. If it is to be, it is always up to me. That's thinking abundance. Living as though one is already thriving in abundance draws that very abundance to us. What a leap!

4. Refuse to accept negativity from others. Look for and surround yourself with light. Be the purveyor of positive energy. Light travels with great alacrity. Moving beyond your former boundaries into the world of quantum (Latin for "how much") physics allows you to challenge what you believe to be true. Remove limits in thought and deed and you will quickly discover how much greater the bounty becomes. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, "Most of the shadows of this life are caused by standing in one's own sunshine."
