Celebrating the Birth of an Influential Host: Oprah

Print Article Print Article

RISMEDIA, Jan. 29, 2007-January 29 marks the birth date of talk-show host Oprah Winfrey. Since her television debut in 1984, Oprah has been an influential female icon.

The multiple-Emmy Award winning host of The Oprah Winfrey Show, is also an influential book publicist, an Academy Award-nominated actress, and a magazine publisher. Oprah has been ranked the richest African American of the 20th century, the most philanthropic African American of all time, and the world's only Black billionaire for three straight years.

To celebrate her birthday and her acheivements as a public figure, some of her most quotable quotes have been compiled below:

• "I was taught to read at an early age. By the time I was three, I was reciting speeches in the church. They'd put me up on the program, and say, 'Little Mistress Winfrey will render a recitation,' and I would do 'Jesus rose on Easter day, Hallelujah, Hallelujah, all the angels did proclaim.'"
• "It doesn't matter who you are, where you come from. The ability to triumph begins with you – always."
• "I really became frustrated with the fact that all I did was write check after check to this or that charity without really feeling like it was a part of me."
• Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough.
• Doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment.
• I always knew I was destined for greatness.
• I am a woman in process. I'm just trying like everybody else. I try to take every conflict, every experience, and learn from it. Life is never dull.
• I believe that every single event in life happens in an opportunity to choose love over fear.
• I don't believe in failure. It is not failure if you enjoyed the process.
• I don't think of myself as a poor deprived ghetto girl who made good. I think of myself as somebody who from an early age knew I was responsible for myself, and I had to make good.
• I don't think you ever stop giving. I really don't. I think it's an on-going process. And it's not just about being able to write a check. It's being able to touch somebody's life.
• I feel that luck is preparation meeting opportunity.
• I still have my feet on the ground, I just wear better shoes.
• Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.
• You know you are on the road to success if you would do your job, and not be paid for it.
