RISMEDIA, April 24, 2007-Jordan Baris, founder and chairman of Jordan Baris Inc. Realtors, recently received a 2007 Civic Award from the Irvington Chamber of Commerce in recognition of his years as a booster of economic development in the township.

Baris, whose West Orange, New Jersey-based firm is a leading independent real estate brokerage, was president of the Chamber from 1993 to 1994. The event, attended by well over 200 of Irvington's government, civic and business leaders, was held at The Graycliff in Moonachie, New Jersey

Baris, a former member of the Irvington Economic Development Commission, has been a longtime supporter of efforts to attract new businesses to Irvington and helped organize a group that successfully fought graffiti in the city.

"It was thrilling to see the positive impact the anti-graffiti committee made," said Baris, whose firm serves many markets including Irvington. "The Chamber has recognized a number of great business people and civic leaders in the past, so it's quite an honor to receive this award and be included among them."

The community-based anti-graffiti committee was Baris' brainchild. The committee successfully removed graffiti from hundreds of properties in Irvington and on main roads leading into the township. The accomplishment was made possible by civic group participation and active support of various Irvington government departments, including the mayor's office, police department, public works department and the schools.

The program was further augmented by inmates assigned to community service working under the supervision of the police department.

"In fact, two of the prisoners volunteered to continue working with the group after they were released from their community service obligations!" said Baris. "It was a very successful program, and I think it helped make Irvington a more appealing place to live."

Along with Baris, the Chamber of Commerce also gave a 2007 Civic Award to the Rev. Ron Christian, the pastor of the Christian Love Baptist Church, who is known for his efforts to stabilize Irvington's neighborhoods and combat crime by offering child care, tutoring, computer learning, homeless and gang intervention, among other civic services.

The Irvington Chamber of Commerce has been a part of the community for more than 69 years and has over 200 members.
