Happy Radio Day

Print Article Print Article

RISMEDIA, May 7, 2007-You've heard of Mother's Day and Father's Day and even Administrative Assistants Day. But did you know that in Russia, on May 7, they celebrate Radio Day? Also known as Communications Workers' Day or Radio and Television Day in Bulgaria, the day commemorates of the invention of radio.

On this day in 1895, Alexander Popov successfully demonstrated his invention. In his demonstration, Popov used Sir Oliver Lodge's coherer, a primitive form of radio signal detection, as a lightning detector before the Russian Physical and Chemical Society in St. Petersburg.

While the actual inventor of the radio is debatable, stemming from Morse code to the discovery of frequency, it is evident where we'd be without radio today. Today, radio takes many forms, including wireless networks and mobile communications, in addition to its most common form-radio broadcasting. Just think, before the invention of the television, commercial radio broadcasts provided not only news and music, but dramas, comedies, variety shows, and many other forms of entertainment. Imagine your commute to work without the radio?

Happy Radio Day!
