MRIS, Sept. 10, 2007–The other week you received an Alert informing you that the MRIS Dial-Up network will be shutdown at the end of the year. That message included a link for more information, but an issue with the MRIS.com Web site temporarily disabled the link. The link is now working; please click here for complete information.
In the meantime, here is some Q&A that we have created in response to your feedback:
Does the Dial-Up Network Shutdown mean that dial-up access isn’t an option anymore?
NO, only the MRIS Dial-Up Network is being shutdown, due to the fact that only 5% of MRIS members still use it–95% have switched to faster broadband or DSL access. If you access the Internet via your own Dial-Up provider (AOL or NetZero, for example) you can continue to use those networks for Dial-Up access.
Will the Dial-Up Network Shutdown affect any other MRIS access (like a Sprint or Verizon wireless card)?
As long as your wireless card allows you to access the Internet via your own provider, you can continue to access all of the MRIS services with your wireless card.
How can I tell whether I am using Dial-Up access?
Dial-Up Networking is what you use when you access the system through your telephone line. If you connect to the Internet and hear screeching and buzzing noises from your computer as it connects, that’s Dial-Up. If the phone number that you dial to connect to the Internet is one provided to you by MRIS, you are using the MRIS Dial-Up network for your Internet access.
What if broadband or DSL isn’t available in my area?
Check the list of providers here . There may be an option available that you are unaware of. The link also lists alternate dial-up providers who serve your area.
If I use my cable company for Internet access, do I have to use their phone system as well?
Absolutely not; bundled services are strictly optional.
