RISMEDIA, Nov. 8, 2008-For Scott Schubiger, a long-time athlete, playing sports instilled the values of preparation, hard work, a focus on the task at hand, and playing fairly. It turns out, he says, that these are the same values that I lean on to be successful in business as well. “Coaching sports has allowed me to build a team that is driven by results and works within a set model that allows us to achieve short- and long-term goals,” he says. Here meet Schubiger, and learn how he’s applying his teamwork frame of mind off the field and into the offices of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate LLC.
Scott Schubiger
Senior Vice President, Membership Development
Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate LLC
Parsippany, New Jersey
Main job responsibility: To lead Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate’s domestic growth strategy.
Favorite music album: “Born To Run” by Bruce Springsteen. Remember, I’m a Jersey guy!
You live and work in New Jersey. Did you grow up in the area? Yes. I grew up in a wonderful small lake community 20 minutes from the beach. New Jersey seems to often fall under the radar, but it is called the Garden State for a reason, with its beaches, mountains and proximity to New York.
A particular sales motto or work philosophy you live by: On my wall and committed to memory are seven leadership principles that I live by: Trust your people, develop a vision, keep your cool, encourage risk, be an expert, invite dissent and simplify.
The most important lesson you want to teach your three daughters: Do not let the fear of failure prohibit you from pursuing your dreams. Experiencing failure (at some point in life) is inevitable, but it is how you bounce back from a setback that matters most. Show me a successful person and I am certain at some point in their life they experienced some degree of failure or setback.
One thing people don’t know about you: I have a master’s degree in sports psychology.
What attracted you to Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate?
I loved the combination of having an iconic name in Better Homes and Gardens with tremendous brand equity, the ability to build a new company with a clean slate backed by the financial strength and wisdom of Realogy.
You have always been active in sports. How did playing and coaching prepare you for a career in sales?
Playing sports instilled the values of preparation, hard work, a focus on the task at hand, and playing fairly. It turns out that these are the same values that I lean on to be successful in business as well. Coaching sports has allowed me to build a team that is driven by results and works within a set model that allows us to achieve short- and long-term goals.
What do you like best about your job?
There are two things. First, looking out three to five years and being able to say that I was part of a team that built this company. Second, I take great pleasure in helping brokers develop a sound footing on which they can add value to and help grow their businesses.
Your job involves a lot of travel and is quite fast-paced. How do you stay grounded?
I have a wonderful and supportive wife, and three lovely daughters. Balancing work and family is very important to me, and when I am not on the road, I am only four miles from the office. This allows me to catch a school concert or sporting event whenever possible.
Describe the value proposition of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate.
I will highlight two key differentiators. The first is the power of targeted-marketing with the help of the Better Homes and Gardens Magazine consumer database tools (through its parent company, Meredith Corporation). They will allow agents to match consumers with the type of homes they need by utilizing additional information from the database. The second is our servicing model. We are operating as strategists who are subject-matter experts in certain key areas of the business, all with the main focus of improving the bottom line and making affiliates more profitable.
