Recently in Colorado Springs our Peterson Air Force Base has had the privilege to be a guinea pig of sorts in a new effort by the Pentagon to reduce energy costs. The 21st Space Wing’s headquarters building will be “covered with several inches of soil and planted with sedum,” which is to say its 19,000-square-foot roof is going green. If all goes well, the grass roof will improve the building’s insulation and eliminate “90 percent of the building’s stormwater runoff,” and the same roof could be planted at other military bases across Colorado Springs.
As I discuss here, I think this has the potential to be something great in Colorado Springs, especially for our real estate market. If green roofing works out for the government facilities – they are going to track the success of the roof very closely – it’s neat to think we could eventually see a more widespread use this type of natural vegetation roof, especially since several Colorado Springs new home builders have made “green” improvements to their products in recent years.
The article notes that natural vegetation roofs lower utility bills and break down greenhouse gases. With our ever-increasing focus on green living and reducing our carbon footprint, I wouldn’t be surprised if we eventually see green-roofed houses in Colorado Springs, further impacting the Colorado Springs real estate market and our city, a place where we already enjoy the value of nature and its important role in our lives.
