AURORA Colorado Real Estate | Light rail through the city.
The new metro light rail system has successfully rolled into city of Aurora and the extensions will eventually travel through the city, creating centers of commerce, gathering places and opportunities to showcase Aurora to travelers from all areas of the Denver metro region.
Creating new businesses along this new light rail extension will be crucial to the popularity and success of this new corridor. These new restaurants, shops and store fronts will be the gateway to all parts of the city of Aurora. There are already several stops throughout Aurora at Parker road and Interstate 225 but they do not match the other more bustling stops along this light rail route. With more construction to continue until 2010 it is important for the city of Aurora to make it’s mark as far as business opportunities around the rail stations.
The city wants to get ahead of any future curves in the track and is working to gather residents’ and developers input on what they’d like to see built around light rail stations. Aurora eventually will be home to at least 10 light rail stations when the entire Interstate 225 corridor comes online in 2015.
While government officials from all levels work to address these problems, planning for future “transit-oriented development” hot spots surrounding yet-to-be built stations, is also underway in hopes that they won’t encounter the same problems commuters face at Nine Mile.
The Aurora City Council said last year that these urban centers should be attractive, walkable mixes of retail, residential and public spaces built in a higher-density than is the city’s norm, and each station’s surrounding area should be unique.
Business leaders are also excited about the Nine Mile station’s popularity and the potential economic impact of future stations.” We think it is going to have a major impact on us … it’s one of the things we have on our event horizon in the long term,” said George Peck, vice president of the Aurora Chamber of Commerce.
Some of the future success of the city of Aurora will be attributed to how well they embrace the business opportunities created by the light rails growth and extensions through the city. It will be exciting to watch over the next few years what expansion and businesses will be key factors in this process.
