JOE SAKIC CELEBRITY CLASSIC
For the tenth year, Joe Sakic is teaming up with Food Bank of the Rockies to help feed needy
Colorado children. The kickoff Celebrity Bash and VIP party is on Friday, August 24. It will be emceed by former Chicago Blackhawks goaltender and Phoenix Coyote commentator Darren Pang. On August 30, there’s a day of golfing at Sanctuary Golf Course.

The opening reception is tonight for the Foothills Art Center’s first ever national juried printmaking exhibit. The juror has chosen 69 works from 55 artists from across America. Support theDouglas County School District by buying a ticket for this raffle. The Douglas County Educational Foundation is investing in the future of schools by raffling off a house. It’s a 3 bedroom, 3.5 bath town home worth over $235,000 in Parker at Highlands at Stonegate. There’s a custom paint package, a kitchen that boasts slab granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, cherry cabinets, and an attached 2-car garage. The DCEF hopes to raise around $500,000 for school programs.

CHAPANGU SCULPTURES

Enjoy nearly 60 spiritual sculptures at the Denver Botanic Gardens. It’s called “Chapungu: Custom and Lengend; A Culture in Stone” and it’s an African sculpture exhibit. They are expressive, contemporary pieces that are up to 11 feet tall and weigh up to 6,000 pounds each. Denver Botanic Gardens,

The Denver Public Library is selling books at bargain prices. Over 50,000 books will be available. Children’s books, non-fiction and fiction books are all available for bargain basement prices. It’s a fundraising event for the Denver Public Library and Denver Public Library Friends Foundation. Sale venues include the B2 Level Conference Center, the Denver Art Museum Concourse and the “Better Books” store in the West Entrance vestibule on Level One. Hardbound Books are $2. Paperback Books are 50 cents. Better Books are priced individually (often include new and collectible). Teachers get a special 25% discount. Great Book Giveaway is 3:30-4:30pm on Sunday, and it’s open to teachers and non-profit organizations. All materials are free during the Great Book Giveaway. MASTERPIECES AT THE DENVER ART MUSEUM
Denver Art Museum has three Renaissance paintings by master painters which rarely tour and have never been to
Denver. They are by Caravaggio, Poussin and Lorrain, and they will compliment the Museum’s collection of other master paintings on the 6th floor of the north building. In addition, the longest painting-by-numbers mural is being displayed at the DAM, it’s 400 feet long and over 3,300 visitors participated to break the Guinness World Record.Denver

“Capturing America’s Game: Photographs of Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig” is at the Denver Art Museum. Vintage photos will show how sports photography helped to establish baseball as
America’s game. In the 1920s when baseball’ popularity took off, several major cities built large baseball stadiums, urban newspapers added sports sections, and photography agencies gained popularity. 20 photos of Ruth and Gehrig are on display, in addition to two baseball bats, four rare baseball cards, and a special poster.

The Wildlife Experience is bringing “Playas.. Gems of the Plains” to town. It’s a unique exhibit that explains the importance of playa lakes. History, geology, ecology and art will be shown with interactive games, models, artifacts and maps. Playa lakes are clay-lined basins that fill with water and feed a diverse plant community.

All proceeds of this event will help build and outdoor area for exercise, training, and agility in MaxFund’s care. It’s also needed for physical therapy and rehabilitation for injured dogs at the shelter and wellness center. There’s a hole-in-one contest with a chance to win $5000 for you and $5000 for MaxFund. There are also other contests includeing a 50-foot putt and longest drive. There are also going to be raffle prizes and goody bags. Registration fees include green fees, cart, lunch, range balls, contests and goody bags. It’s to benefit the MaxFund, a no-kill animal shelter.

Mansion. Colorado Historical Society volunteers will guide you through the public areas. No reservations are necessary. Note that after the last Tuesday in August, the 28th, the mansion will be closed to the public until the holiday tours (Dec. 12-15). While on the tour, or at the Colorado History Museum bookstore, be sure to pick up a copy of “Queen of the Hill.” It’s a wonderful history of the Governor’s Residence complete with full color photos.
