Eight Ways to Assure Your Clients Work with a Reputable Mover

RSMEDIA, Nov. 13, 2007- A dedicated coach will answer questions and be an advocate throughout the move process to assure that your clients’ moves are the best they’ll ever make. The Move Advocate, known for working with some of the nation’s most reputable movers provides eight characteristics of a reputable mover.

A reputable mover will:

1. Ask to perform a visual survey of your household goods and will give you a not-to-exceed or binding price. A phone survey is not a guaranteed estimate.

2. Give Written Estimates-Do not accept a verbal estimate. Always get it in writing.

3. File and Publish a Tariff-Reputable movers have filed a tariff with the government for state-to-state moves. The tariff outlines exactly how their prices are calculated. Movers may discount from this tariff but they may not exceed it. If a mover does not have a published tariff they are not a reputable mover.

4. Calculate state-to-state moves using weight, distance, and special services.

5. Ask for payment upon delivery, not before.

6. Allow client to accompany driver to the weigh station to verify weight of shipment.

7. Not jeopardize quality service by “low-balling” the estimate for your move. An estimate that is significantly below that of other recognized movers is a red flag.

8. Have his/her own moving trucks and equipment. A reputable mover will not show up in a truck marked with another moving company’s name on the side.

The Moving Industry has found itself reacting and adapting to the challenges that the housing market has presented in 2007. Not surprisingly, The American Moving and Storage Association reports that July 2007, year-over-year, shipment volume decreased in these areas:

Corporate relocations (paid by employer): -4.0%
COD shipments (paid by customer): -9.6%
Military shipments (paid by the military): -8.2%

Although volume decreased overall, Americans are still moving! The van line industry charts migration patterns each year to ensure that moving needs across the nation will continue to be met. Shipment tracking surveys for 2006 showed where Americans were moving to, and from. These vary yearly and can often be attributed to economic or weather related factors.

Overall consensus is that Americans are leaving the Central Northeast region for the West and Southeast.

Top 5 states with higher percentage in-bound moves:
• North Carolina
• Oregon
• South Carolina
• Nevada
• Idaho

Top 5 states with higher out-bound moves:
• Michigan
• North Dakota
• New Jersey
• New York
• Indiana

Although more balanced in their in-bound/out-bound ratios, California, Texas and Florida still book more total shipments than other states.
