RISMEDIA, March 17, 2008-When most people think of March, they think of St. Patrick’s Day. But March is more than just a time to celebrate Irish heritage. It is the highly anticipated beginning of spring, and with that comes many reasons to celebrate.

The end of March marks the official start of the baseball season, and the perfect time to visit the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York.

The Hall of Fame and Museum is the largest collection of baseball information and is home to the greatest players to ever wear a uniform.

The Hall of Fame offers activities for visitors of all ages and includes a hands-on experience in the exhibits, trivia games, artifact presentations, and even the occasional special guest and Hall of Famer visits.

Dr. Seuss National Memorial

Theodore Seuss Geisel-aka Dr. Seuss-was born on March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The city appears to have inspired much of Geisel’s work and is now home to the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden.

Geisel’s stepdaughter, sculptor Lark Grey Dimond-Cates, created the bronze sculptures of Dr. Seuss and his most beloved characters. The sculptures include Dr. Seuss and the Cat in the Hat, Horton Court, and The Storyteller, just to name a few.

The sculptures tell the story of the famous author/illustrator as well as providing a setting for contemporary storytellers.

Outagamie County Historical Society

March 24 marks world-renowned magician and escape artist Harry Houdini’s birthday. Born in Budapest, Hungary, and named Ehrich Weiss, Ehrich changed his name to Harry when he became a member of the Houdini Brothers magic team. He named himself after his idol-Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin, the popular French magician.

Harry and his family moved to Appleton, Wisconsin when he was just 4 years old, and so Appleton came to be known as Harry’s hometown. The Outagamie County Historical Society in Appleton, Wisconsin is home to the AKA Houdini exhibit, which allows you to experience some of Houdini’s tricks through hands-on activities.

St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, the man believed to have driven the snakes out of Ireland, is one of Christianity’s most widely known figures. St. Patrick’s Day falls during the Christian season of Lent, and many cities have taken on the tradition of holding a parade to honor Irish patriotism.

The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in the U.S. in 1762, and has continued as a staple in any St. Patty’s Day celebration. The St. Patty’s Day Parade in Washington, D.C. has been around since 1971, and usually lasts around two-and-a-half hours. The theme for this year’s parade, scheduled for Sunday, March 16, is “A History of Strength.”
