RISMEDIA, April 18, 2008-In the face of one of the most challenging real estate markets in recent years, a consortium of business and municipal leaders are joining forces to redefine the way people look at the metropolitan Detroit real estate market.
The Big Open House, a region-wide community open house, aims to highlight the unparalleled opportunities for prospective home buyers in the communities that comprise southeast Michigan.
Agents in seven counties-Oakland, Macomb, Wayne, Ingham, Livingston, Saint Clair and Washtenaw-will hold open houses on Sunday, April 27. The open houses will be publicized in a special tabloid-sized section of both the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News the Friday before the event and on an exclusive website, www.TheBigOpenHouse.com.
“Our goal is to change the conversation from negative to positive, to focus on the many good aspects of living in metro Detroit,” Metropolitan Consolidated Association of Realtors CEO Walt Baczkowski said. Added the Realtor association’s president, Furhad Waquad: “We are committed to changing the public’s perception of today’s market.”
School districts are getting in on the act, too, to showcase what they can offer prospective new residents. Participating districts include Bloomfield Hills, Grosse Pointe, Troy and Utica.
Tim McAvoy, director of Community Relations for the Troy school district, put together “Live & Learn in Troy,” a 2007 community open house for the Oakland County city. The community open house concept, he said, “is a great way to ensure that you get information about your community’s services in the hands of potential residents.”
Similar community open house events have also been held in Bloomfield Township and Berkley, but The Big Open House takes the concept to a new level.
“The Big Open House aims to be the Super Bowl of community open houses,” Baczkowski said.
The Big Open House is sponsored by Chase Bank and Land Owners Title Agency.

RISMEDIA, May 12, 2008-Far too many real estate agents are overworked and underpaid primarily because they try to do everything themselves.
