As a top producer, I am often asked, “what’s the secret?” For over 18 years, I could not pinpoint the so-called “secret.” But then as I was Facebooking another Realtor whom I had not seen in the office, I gave her some off-the-cuff advice: treat your business like a job, set regular hours, put in a full eight-hour day, make time to run your personal errands and always be the first to arrive at appointments.
I didn’t really pay much attention to the advice I had given her; after all, I had given my agents this advice on many occasions and had required it of myself and my team for years. I had practiced this since my first day in real estate.
When I arrived at the office the next day, I decided to track the agents who had adhered to my suggestions over the years. Then the light bulb went off. The agents who came in every day at the same time and were here ready to work had consistently more production. Their consistency put them in work mode so they were always available to take a listing or show property. They developed regular habits for prospecting. They have a continuous pipeline and, in general, had a more balanced life.
The “secret” is agent consistency. Even if you work from home, you must get up every morning, get dressed and be ready to work.
I challenge every Realtor reading this to do just that: show up, ready to work every day. The opportunities will find their way to you. Try this for six months. I am anxious to hear the secret of your success in 2010.
