Back in 1964, Miami’s city fathers were thrilled when Jackie Gleason agreed to move his hit television show from New York City to Miami Beach. Gleason was one of television’s biggest stars, and bringing him to Miami meant more prestige and more vacationers. “The Great One” did seven years of his weekly comedy shows from the Miami Beach Convention Center, and lived the rest of his life in Florida. Gleason left the world with his humor /even after he died in 1987. Inscribed on his large tomb is his famous TV tagline, “And away we go.”
Gleason’s Miami home will be going to auction on February 19th. The house has 5 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms and a screened pool deck. In addition to his 9,250 square foot estate and guest party house at the Country Club of Miami, a number of Gleason’s personal possessions including Ralph Kramden’s bus driver uniforms and Gleason’s custom made golf cart will also be up for bid.
