Warehouse stores such as Sam’s Club, Costco and BJ’s, among others, can offer great deals. But not on everything.

Many of the items these stores sell are packaged as combo deals, requiring a shopper to buy two of something for the best savings. Paper towels and toilet paper might be best to buy in bulk because they can be stored for months, but do you really need two dozen eggs at one time?

To get the biggest savings at warehouse stores, you’ll have to buy in bulk. Here are some secrets of what to buy to save the most at warehouse stores:

Organic produce
Groceries can be a hit or miss at warehouse stores, but if you can get a sample of the fruit or vegetable you want to buy, then they can be worthwhile. This is especially true for organic fruit, which can be half the price of what you’d find at a grocery store. Some organic fruit also tastes a lot better, making the extra cost over non-organic worthwhile.

Paper products
Napkins, paper towels, toilet paper and other items that can be stored in the garage for months, if not years, are a lot cheaper in bulk. The packages are large and cumbersome, so clean out some space at home to store them.

Alcohol
Beer, wine and hard liquor is cheaper at warehouse stores, and you may not have to buy it in bulk. If you do buy alcohol in bulk, it should be even cheaper and the wine and hard liquor will last for a long time if stored properly.

Meat
Regular and organic meat is a lot cheaper at warehouse stores, though be sure to compare prices with grocery stores sales. Double wrap it in plastic bags and put it in the freezer and the meat should last for months. Again, you’re buying this in bulk to save money, so only buy as much as you’ll use.

Coffee
Whole coffee beans by the pound can be less than half the cost than at a grocery store. The catch is that you’ll probably have to buy a 3-pound bag, which can last a few months. You can either grind it at the store or grind it at home each time you make coffee. The beans can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature and should be good for a few months.
