Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Fox & Roach President Joan Docktor is stepping down after 30 years at the firm, the company announced Friday, as they bid farewell to a dynamic and storied leader who was instrumental in growing Fox & Roach into a regional powerhouse spanning 75 offices across four states.
“I am so proud to be part of this industry in which everyone is so kind and giving,” Docktor told RISMedia. “The charity and sacrifice by our real estate professionals and company owners and executives is second to none. Homeownership is so important for people and we get to participate in it everyday. I cannot think of a better career.“
With her final day coming at the end of the month, Docktor leaves behind a rich legacy. Inducted into RISMedia’s Newsmakers Hall of Fame in 2021, she has been recognized for her industry advocacy and championing of “servant leadership,” as well as for her charitable work across the region.
“Joan’s impact extends well beyond her role as one of the most effective executives to operate one of the largest brokerage firms in our industry,” said RISMedia Founder & CEO John Featherston. “For decades she has continually helped shape and improve the overall residential real estate industry through her involvement and contributions throughout her career. Whatever Joan chooses to do next, one thing is certain—she will be adding more value and innovation to our industry while making a positive and lasting impact.”
Docktor will continue to mentor new agents, according to the company, as regional managers begin reporting directly to Fox & Roach CEO Larry Flick V. “It has been my privilege and honor to help lead Fox & Roach for so many years, and I know the future of the company is in excellent hands as we continue to support the dream of homeownership,” she said in a statement.
“Joan is one of our company’s most phenomenal success stories and we would not be the leading brokerage we are today without her tremendous leadership,” Flick said in a statement. “Joan has been a mentor and friend to me and so many throughout the industry, and I can’t thank her enough for her unwavering dedication.”
Docktor’s time with Fox & Roach began with a bang, as she was named “Rookie of the Year” after joining as a sales associate in 1986, before quickly climbing the ranks of leadership. She also served for many years in leadership roles on the MLS side of industry, including on the Board of Directors for Bright MLS, the country’s second largest multiple listing service.
In the real estate industry and beyond, Docktor has remained an unrelenting advocate for women, and continues to be an active member at The Forum for Executive Women.
Announcing her resignation, Docktor highlighted relationships built at Fox & Roach, and promised that her nurturing of future leaders and professionals would continue.
“I’ve always said the people that chose this career are some of the most passionate and caring professionals I’ve ever met,” she said. “Although I’m stepping back from the executive team, I look forward to continuing to serve as a mentor to agents, women, and professionals across the region.”
Speaking to RISMedia in 2017, Docktor credited a female mentor as providing a powerful example and helping her build confidence and break glass ceilings. She also lauded Fox & Roach for elevating many other women into leadership roles.
Docktor’s reputation and influence extended far beyond the real estate community, as she was recognized with numerous awards for leadership in business, including the 2016 Helena Devereux Women in Leadership Award and the 2016 Main Line Today Women on the Move award. She was also recognized by Philadelphia Style as one of the city’s nine most influential women.
“She will be greatly missed, but we are thrilled for her exciting next chapter,” added Flick.
