If you’re walking around your house and you notice a hole in the vinyl siding, don’t ignore it. A hole, even a small one, can allow water and pests to get behind the siding. If you don’t address a minor problem, you can find yourself facing much bigger issues, such as structural damage, leaks and mold.
Inspect your vinyl siding on a regular basis and look for any signs of a problem. Making DIY repairs is easy when you have the right tools. The approach you take will depend on the size of the hole.
Fill a Small Hole in Your Siding With Caulk
If the hole is small, you can repair it with vinyl adhesive caulk. Look for a product that’s a close match for the color of your vinyl siding. If you can’t find a caulk that’s the same color as your siding, look for a paintable caulk.
Before you get started, read the manufacturer’s instructions. Depending on the size of the hole, you might need to apply caulk in layers. If so, allow each layer to dry before applying the next one. Use a putty knife to smooth out the caulk, let it dry, then gently sand the spot that you repaired and the area around it.
If you were unable to find a caulk that matches the color of your siding, you’ll have to paint the spot that you fixed so it matches the rest of the house. Be sure to use paint that’s designed for vinyl siding.
Use Extra Siding to Make Repairs
If the damaged area is relatively large, you can use a piece of vinyl siding to cover the hole. When you had your siding installed, the contractors might have left some scraps behind for you to use for repairs. If so, that can be your best option because that extra siding is the same color as the siding on the house.
If you don’t have scraps, you can buy some from a siding supplier. You may or may not be able to find a perfect match.
When extra siding is available, making repairs is straightforward. Just cut a piece of siding that’s big enough to cover the hole and use a caulk to secure it in place.
Consult a Professional If Necessary
If you discover a large hole or widespread damage, have a local siding company conduct a thorough inspection. There might be additional problems that you can’t see, or some or all of your siding might need to be replaced. Depending on the source of the damage, your homeowners insurance company might cover the cost of repairs or replacement.
