Fashion Week, the twice-yearly gala that takes over New York, introduces forecasts for the year ahead to the notably and expensively well-dressed. But while the show is ostensibly all about clothing, it influences every aspect of color and design, including trends in home décor.
So, it’s no coincidence that color authority Pantone chooses these occasions to announce the year’s hottest color trends. And if you’re a homeowner with decorating on your mind, take note that the color palette for 2018 is distinctly non-traditional.
“Colors this year are decidedly outspoken,” Pantone spokeswoman Leatrice Eiseman told House Beautiful Magazine. “It’s a time for trading in cyclical trends in favor of bold and expressive hues.”
Pantone, which named ultra-violet the color of 2018, suggests chic new colors to seriously consider when coordinating walls, furniture and accents:
Violets
Both Ultra-violet, a vibrant, spirited purple, and its more subdued cousin, Crocus Petal, are top choices heading into spring. Coordinating the softer room color with deeply accented pillows, artwork and other accessories lend an air of cheerful sophistication.
Russet Orange
This muted orange suggesting a forest floor in autumn, is primed to take over as a bold new color du jour. Pair it with off-white and earth tones for maximum warmth and effect.
Valiant Poppy
This rich, jewel-tone red off the classic autumnal palette is deemed by Pantone to be a brave, outgoing shade ready for its close-up this year.
Ceylon Yellow
A rich, silky hue that sits somewhere between true yellow and the greenish undertones of brass. It’s described as a savory, spicy yellow that adds exotic touches to any room.
Martini Olive
Described as a smooth, sophisticated, urbane green close in color to its namesake, it’s meant to become the focal point in a sleek, monochromatic environment.
Nebulus Blue
Defined as an electric, celestial shade similar to early twilight and starry-eyed blue, this marine-like shade remains a natural pair with white in a beachy setting.
Limelight
A sprightly yellow with lots of bite, this effervescent pop of color will be sunny and cheery in any setting and sure to be the center of attention.
