While it can be easy to get distracted by soaring ceilings and sleek appliances—or frightened by things like leaky basements—there are much more subtle problems that can be easy to miss when you’re touring an open house. Whether you’re looking to buy or rent, make sure you double check for these sneaky issues, which may seem small but can be a major annoyance down the road.
Phone Signal
Before you leave the residence, whip your phone out and check to see if you can make a call or access your data. Being stuck in your new home unable to use your phone is an annoyance at best, and a safety issue at worst. Sketchy mobile connections can be common in Canadian basements or buildings that are partially below grade.
Everyday Noises
As important as the inside of a space is, it’s equally important to think about the immediate surroundings and what they might mean for the enjoyment of that space, especially noise-wise. If you’re checking out a condominium, make note of how close the unit is to the elevator and garbage room, both of which will result in increased traffic. If you’re looking at a house, pay attention to nearby things like train tracks or schoolyards, which can add a lot of day-to-day noise too.
Water Pressure
While this can sometimes be fixed, that’s not always the case. And anyone who’s ever taken a shower using a faucet with low water pressure will tell you just how unpleasant it can be. So before you sign that application or make an offer, be sure to check the kitchen and bathroom faucets, as well as the shower and bath.
