In cold regions, sand and salt can provide traction on slick winter roads and keep people from slipping on snow and ice. When sand, salt, and slush get carried into houses, however, homeowners can be left with a mess. A little prevention and some regular cleaning can protect floors from damage.
How Sand, Salt and Slush Can Damage Flooring
Winter weather, and products that are used to deal with it, can cause a range of problems. Some are minor inconveniences, while others can require expensive repairs. Sand and salt can get tracked onto carpets. As people walk around, particles can get ground in, and stains can form. The abrasiveness of sand and salt can wear away a floor’s finish. Moisture from slush can warp hardwood flooring. If the damage is severe, the floor might need to be refinished.
How to Protect Your Flooring
Prevention is key. The more you keep sand, salt, and slush out of your house, the less cleanup you’ll have to do, and the less stress you’ll have to deal with.
Place durable doormats outside each exterior door so people can wipe their feet before they enter the house. Put another doormat inside each door. People might not get all the sand and salt off their shoes and boots the first time. A second doormat will keep debris from getting carried into your home.
Have people remove their shoes or boots as soon as they enter the house. Provide a chair or bench so relatives and visitors will be able to sit down and easily remove their footwear. Placed a shoe rack near the door to keep things organized.
You don’t want a puddle to form on the floor when slush and ice melt. Lay a durable mat on the floor under the shoe rack to collect water.
Wipe Your Pet’s Paws
If you have a dog or cat that goes outside, make sure that it doesn’t track sand, salt, and slush all over your house. Train your pet to let a member of your family wipe its paws when it comes inside. If your pet isn’t used to having someone wipe its feet, be patient and provide praise and treats.
Clean the Floors Regularly
Even if you and others make a concerted effort to keep sand, salt, and slush out of the house, some will still get in. You’ll have to vacuum, sweep, and mop the floors regularly, particularly in areas near exterior doors. Being vigilant and consistent can keep debris and water contained in small areas.
Only use cleaning products that are intended to be used on the type of flooring you have. Before you use any product, read the label and follow the instructions carefully.
