When you move into a new home, you can decorate it any way you want. You might be tempted to splurge on new furniture, but before you do, ask yourself if it’s necessary and if it would fit your budget.
Evaluate the Furniture You Already Have
You might need to buy some furniture for your new home, but many of the pieces you currently have might work fine. Before you make any unnecessary purchases, assess the condition of the furniture you already own. Pieces that are in good shape can go with you to your new house.
Figure Out If Your Old Furniture Would Work in Your New Home
The furniture that you currently have might be in good condition, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be right for your new home. The house that you’re moving into might have a different architectural style than the house you’re leaving, or the rooms might have different dimensions.
Measure the rooms at your new house and the dimensions of your sofa, tables, beds and other furniture to figure out if they will fit. You might realize that a large piece of furniture would overwhelm a room at your new house, or you might discover that you’ll have a significant amount of empty space that you’ll have to fill somehow. You might need to buy new furniture, or you might be able to keep the pieces you already have and arrange them creatively in your new house.
Consider Your Budget
Buying a house is expensive. Covering a down payment, closing costs and moving expenses can feel overwhelming.
If you’re already feeling stretched thin financially, don’t make things worse by draining your bank account or racking up credit card debt to buy new furniture. Keep money in your emergency fund and keep your credit card balances down so you’ll be prepared to deal with a financial setback, such as emergency home repairs or an unanticipated medical bill.
If you want new furniture, but you can’t afford it right now, do the best you can with the furniture you already own. If you have pieces that are damaged or worn or that don’t fit your new house’s architectural style, some new upholstery or a fresh coat of paint might be enough to make things work.
If you can afford to spend a modest amount on new furniture, be strategic to get the most bang for your buck. Decide which pieces are most important to you and shop around to find the best deals. Retailers typically reduce their prices on holidays.
