In 2023, Thurman co-launched United Purpose Mortgage as a subsidiary of Howard Hanna Mortgage Services with the goal to make homeownership more attainable for all home buyers, especially those in underserved communities.. He was also elected to the board of East Liberty Development Initiative in 2023.

Thurman serves as treasurer for three Pittsburgh non-profits, is an active board member of community development organizations, and was an inaugural member of NAREB Pittsburgh, contributing to the establishment of a local chapter Elected to the Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group (PCRG) Summit Committee.
