For the first time in the competition’s history, the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship will be featured on network television. NBC will showcase golf’s premier power and distance competition on Saturday, Dec. 28 beginning at 4 p.m. EST, 1 p.m. PST.
“The RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship is an extraordinary annual event that features golf’s most powerful hitters in the world,” says Mike Reagan, RE/MAX Sr. Vice President, Business Alliances. “We’re honored that NBC has recognized the competition’s remarkable growth in popularity and will telecast this year’s finals.”
NBC will chronicle the journey to the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship beginning with 192 hopeful men and women from 16 different countries who competed locally and regionally, and conclude with the dramatic eight-person final in Las Vegas. The road to the championship included eight months of qualifying events held all over the world.
Hosted under the lights of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, the finalists compete for a winner-take-all prize of $250,000. The season-ending competition features eight of the longest drivers of the golf ball in the world who have swings exceeding 150 miles per hour with ball speeds topping 220 miles per hour. The finalists hit from a custom- designed platform built high on top of the speedway’s grandstands.
The world championship of long driving has been an annual event since 1975 and attracts competitors from around the globe. Participation in the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship has nearly tripled since the event’s inception. Finalists in the competition typically hit a golf ball more than 400 yards; more than 100 yards longer than the average member of the PGA Tour.
