The recent international shipping container shortage is making international shipping a challenge, not only for commercial exports, but also for shipment of household goods. Shipments to and from Hawaii and Alaska may also be impacted by the shipping container shortage.
Historically, the U.S. has imported more goods than it has exported. Recently, a booming global economy and a weakening dollar have contributed to a significant shift in this equation. As demand goes up for U.S. goods (a situation which should give a boost to the U.S. economy), U.S. exporters are finding it more and more difficult to find available containers to accommodate the demand. Inevitably, when demand goes up and supply goes down, prices increase. Pricing for shipping containers has increased in some areas over 20% from last year.
Unfortunately, an individual home shipment often falls to the bottom of the pecking order when it comes time to reserve a shipping container. In fact, some moving companies have recently issued caution statements concerning international shipments, and the necessity for advance planning and booking.
